Twenty Eight

Jennifer Brookes: If I had the final say in how I spend my time, I would ride the ferry back and forth every day from island to mainland until the captain kicked me off. There’s a sense of freedom and lightness in being in-between two places, with 45 minutes or so of liberation from the responsibilities waiting on either side. I’m convinced it’s the wind in your hair that encapsulates this feeling. The first 10 seconds of this video features my dear Sarah Burba, who was visiting from Denver for the week. Strangers take up the other 20 seconds, all on the way from Seattle to Bremerton. You might call this video a thirty-second tribute to my good friend Amanda Walker’s Moments From a Ferry. You might not.

Eric Peterson: The second instrument I ever learned was violin, which I began to do through my middle school’s orchestra. For a variety of reasons, including large hands and fingers and a lack of interest, I never really excelled at the violin, and moved on to other instruments instead. As a result, my violin abilities never really progressed past a middle school proficiency. If you’re a parent considering encouraging your child to pick up an instrument, but you demand immediate results, violin should not be your first choice. Once they learn the proper embouchure, they can make a flute sound heavenly, but expect their violins to screech and squeal for years to come, as in this week’s piece.
